For first-time applicants

The 6-Hour Course

Before California will appoint you as a notary public, state law requires six hours of approved education. This is that course — ten modules, exactly 360 tracked minutes, built on the Secretary of State's curriculum and updated to the 2026 Notary Public Handbook.

Opening soon — planned launch pricing: $129 list, $79 at launch. Join the founding list for first access.

Curriculum

Ten modules, 360 minutes, nothing skipped

The state sets the syllabus: by law, the course must cover everything the written exam can test. Each module pairs video-first teaching with a plain-language summary, and ends with 8 learning checks whose explanations cite the Handbook or Government Code section behind the answer — 80 checks in all.

ModuleTime
1. Getting Commissioned

What a notary public is and does; who qualifies (18 or older, California resident); the full path — course, state exam, background check and Live Scan, and the application itself; which convictions disqualify you.

45 min

The four-year term of office; where your commission is valid; the $15,000 surety bond; the oath of office; when your commission actually takes effect; rules for public-employee notaries.

30 min
3. Managing Your Commission

Filing your oath and bond with the county clerk — including the 30-day deadline; reporting name and address changes; answering written requests from the Secretary of State; agreements with your employer.

25 min
4. The Notarial Journal

Keeping one active journal; sequential entries and everything each entry must record; securing the journal; copies and public inspection requests (and the 15-day response rule); what to do if a journal is surrendered, lost, or destroyed.

50 min
5. Identifying Signers

Satisfactory evidence of identity; the accepted ID list; credible witnesses and when they can be used; the limits of personal knowledge; recording identification in your journal.

35 min
6. The Acts I — Acknowledgments

Acknowledgment wording under Government Code §1189; completing the certificate correctly; why the signer must personally appear; the errors that get certificates rejected.

40 min
7. The Acts II — Jurats, Oaths, Proof of Execution

Jurat wording under Government Code §1195; administering oaths and affirmations; proof of execution by a subscribing witness; signature by mark.

45 min
8. Special Cases & Refusals

Certifying copies and powers of attorney — what you may and may not do; incomplete documents (never notarize them); documents in a language you cannot read; the situations where the law requires you to refuse.

30 min
9. Seal, Fees & Money Rules

Your seal: required elements, custody, authorized manufacturers, and destroying a seal; the Government Code §8211 fee schedule; why extra charges are prohibited; how fees work when your employer paid for your commission.

30 min
10. Misconduct, Penalties & Staying Legal

Grounds for denial, suspension, and revocation; civil penalties; the unauthorized practice of law — the line a notary must never cross; fraud schemes that target notaries; the disciplinary guidelines.

How it works

Seat time is the legal gate — we track it for you

Tracked minutes

State rules give no credit for partial attendance. The player tracks your time on task server-side, saves your progress across sessions, and works on phone, tablet, or computer — in English or Spanish.

80 learning checks

Checks are for learning, not gatekeeping: miss one and you get the explanation and the source citation, then move on better prepared for the state exam.

Instant Proof of Completion

The moment your 360 minutes and all ten modules are complete, your Proof of Completion is generated — sequentially numbered, with the contents state law requires — into your portal and your email. It stays valid for two years, and you can re-download it any time at no charge.

After the course, the work isn't over — the state exam, Live Scan, bond, and county filing remain. Our step tracker walks you through every one. And the exam prep — a timed 45-question simulator built on current law — is how you walk into the exam ready.
